Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO I JOIN?
Check our "How to Join" page for a complete schedule of what's needed to join the National Ski Patrol.

DO I HAVE TO BE AN EXPERT SKIER TO JOIN?
No, but a solid skiing style is necessary. We can teach you what you need to know to handle a toboggan, so a good steady intermediate style is fine to start with.

WHY DO PEOPLE PATROL IF THEY DON'T GET PAID?
Most patrollers do it for the love of skiing and the fun of being outdoors every weekend. Most areas also give volunteer patrollers a lift ticket for a family member and sometimes offer discounts on food and lodging.

WHY AREN'T YOU ACCEPTING ANY NEW CANDIDATES RIGHT NOW?
Bryce Mountain can be covered by a relatively small number of patrollers, compared to some of the larger ski areas. Keeping membership small assures all patrollers of an adequate number of duty days during the short mid-atlantic ski season.

ARE THERE WAYS TO ADVANCE IN THE NATIONAL SKI PATROL SYSTEM?
Yes, basic members can participate in further training and become Senior members and/or Certified members. There are also Section, Region, Division and National positions for ambitious patrollers.
